Udawalawe: open plains, elephants almost every drive and shorter days.
Wilpattu: lakes, forest and very few jeeps. Patience pays off here.
Udawalawe almost never disappoints. Yala is the bigger adventure.

For leopards and variety, Yala. For elephants on almost every drive, fewer jeeps and an easier day (especially with kids), Udawalawe. From Ella or the south coast both are realistic, so pick by what you most want to see.
Yala has the best odds; Wilpattu has far fewer jeeps and calmer sightings, but the bush is denser. Choose by geography too: Yala fits the south and Ella, Wilpattu fits the airport, Negombo and the Cultural Triangle.
It is possible for Udawalawe and Yala, but it means a very long day with little time in each. We usually suggest one park per day, or two days with a night near the parks. Message us and we will plan it.
Udawalawe and Wilpattu. Yala's Blocks 1 and 2 usually close for a few weeks in that window (in 2026 from 14 September to 15 October).
