Plan from EllaUdawalawe National Park
Udawalawe is Sri Lanka's surest bet for wild elephants, with family herds grazing open grassland around a big reservoir. It's also the easiest safari to fit into a travel day between Ella and the south coast.
Safari days from $160 for 2, all-in with pickup, jeep and park tickets Staying near the park · $240 return from Mirissa
Around 250 elephants live here, and family herds with calves are very likely on any drive. It's the most reliable park in Sri Lanka for them.
Grassland and scattered trees around the reservoir mean you watch animals properly, often close, instead of peering into thick bush.
Relaxed drives and quick rewards make it the easiest introduction to a Sri Lankan safari, and a great one with children.
A morning or afternoon drive between Ella and the beach, with the Elephant Transit Home a few minutes down the road.
Every safari is in your own jeep with a licensed driver. Prices are per jeep (up to 6 people), not per seat.

14:30–18:00

$40 private jeep
06:00–18:00

Park tickets are on top of these jeep prices (see the fees below), and every planner estimate includes them, together with your car and driver.
Door-to-gate drive times and pickup times with normal traffic, rounded to 15 minutes. Your driver waits while you're in the park, then takes you on to your next stop.

Udawalawe looks more like the African savannah than the jungle you might expect: open grassland, scattered trees and a big reservoir with bleached tree trunks standing in the water, the hills hazy in the distance.
The stars are the elephants. Around 250 live here, and on most drives you'll meet family herds of aunts, mothers and wobbly calves, grazing, dust-bathing and ambling across the track a few metres away. Because the country is open, you watch them properly instead of glimpsing grey shapes in the bush, and you'll see how a herd works, with the big females quietly keeping the little ones in the middle.
There's plenty more. Water buffalo wallow in the shallows, crocodiles bask on the banks, and the birdlife is superb, from peacocks and bee-eaters to eagles watching from dead trees. Leopards and sloth bears live here too but are rarely seen, so come for the elephants and treat anything else as a bonus.
Any time. Udawalawe is open all year with no annual closure, and its elephants live here year-round. The drier spells, roughly January to April and June to September, are slightly better, as herds gather near the water and the grass is shorter. After rain the park turns a vivid green, which photographers love.
Add the Elephant Transit Home, a few minutes from the gate, where orphaned calves are bottle-fed until they're ready to return to the wild. A visit takes about half an hour, so time it for one of the feeding sessions.
What you might see in Udawalawe
Our honest odds for a single half-day drive in a good season. Wild animals keep their own schedule, so nobody can promise a sighting.

Nothing in the wild is guaranteed, but elephants are very likely on any drive here, usually family herds with calves. Leopards and sloth bears live in the park too, but they're rarely seen.
Both work well. Mornings are cooler and fresher, while afternoons have warm light and suit a later start from Ella or the coast.
Yes. It's a few minutes from the park gate, and you can watch orphaned calves being fed before they're released back into the wild. Feeding times are usually 9 am, noon, 3 pm and 6 pm but sometimes change, and entry is a separate small ticket.
Yes. There's no annual closure, only rare weather closures, such as the few days after Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025.
Udawalawe for elephants, open views and families; Yala for leopards and variety, with more jeeps. With one morning to spare and children in tow, Udawalawe is the easier, surer day.
Yes, that's the idea: pickup in Ella, safari, then drop-off in Mirissa or Galle, for example. The Matchmaker builds the timeline and an all-in price for any combination.
Please don't. Feeding wild elephants is illegal in Sri Lanka, and it teaches them to hang around roads, which ends badly for them.
Plan an Udawalawe safari: elephant herds, morning vs afternoon drives, entrance fees, the Elephant Transit Home and easy trips from Ella or Mirissa.
Madu River boat rides, Brief Garden, turtle hatcheries and wide beaches, plus a realistic look at how far Bentota is from Udawalawe and Yala.
Walk Galle Fort's ramparts, swim at Unawatuna and Jungle Beach, and see how an Udawalawe or Yala safari fits into a stay on the Galle coast.
