Wilpattu National Park

Quiet lakes, shy leopards and hardly another jeep

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's biggest national park, a maze of red-sand tracks and thick forest opening onto still, sand-rimmed lakes where leopards and sloth bears come to drink. It sits right where many trips begin or end, between the airport and the Cultural Triangle.

    The quiet park

Far fewer jeeps than Yala. Sightings tend to be calm, with a handful of vehicles rather than a traffic jam.

  • 2

    Lakes like nowhere else

Around a hundred natural villus, shallow lakes ringed with sand, draw in deer, buffalo, crocodiles, storks and eagles, and the cats that hunt them.

  • 3

Leopards, and maybe a sloth bear

A leopard is possible on any drive. A sloth bear is a lucky bonus, more likely on a full day deep in the park.

  • 4

On the way in or out

A morning drive is easy from Anuradhapura and doable from Kalpitiya or Sigiriya, and an afternoon drive can link Negombo or the airport with the Cultural Triangle in one long day.

What a safari here feels like

Wilpattu is the patient person's park. Its name means "land of lakes", and a drive here is a slow journey from one villu to the next: shallow, sand-rimmed natural lakes that open suddenly out of thick, dry forest. Each one is a stage. Spotted deer graze the edges, painted storks wade, crocodiles drift, and an eagle sits on a dead branch keeping an eye on everything.

The tracks are red sand, the forest is dense, and for long stretches it's just you, the birdsong and the occasional crack of something big moving in the bush. Then your driver stops dead and points, and there's a leopard padding along the track ahead, or a sloth bear shuffling between the trees. Sightings here are rarer than in Yala, but when they happen they're often calm, with a handful of jeeps rather than a traffic jam.

It's a big, wild place: Sri Lanka's largest national park, closed to visitors for years during the civil war and still only partly open today. That's exactly why it feels so unhurried.

When to go

The best months are February to October, the dry season, when the water shrinks and animals concentrate around the villus. Sloth bears are most often reported around June and July, when the palu trees fruit.

From November to January the north-east monsoon brings rain. The park usually stays open, but tracks turn muddy, and heavy storms can close it at short notice, as happened for a few days in late 2025. There's no regular annual closure.

Morning, afternoon or full day?

  • Morning is generally the better half-day: cooler, with more going on around the lakes. From Anuradhapura it's an easy start, and from Kalpitiya or Sigiriya an early but doable one. From Negombo, Colombo or Trincomalee it's too early to be practical.
  • Afternoon suits travel days, for example from the airport or Negombo towards Anuradhapura or Sigiriya, with the safari in the middle of the journey.
  • Full day is where Wilpattu shines. The park is huge, and its quietest, most rewarding lakes lie deep inside, beyond the reach of a half-day. If leopards and bears are the dream, give it the whole day and pack a lunch for the designated rest points.

We plan every Wilpattu day from the main Hunuwilagama gate, about an hour west of Anuradhapura. The western Eluwankulama entrance has a long record of flood closures, so we don't rely on it.

A better, kinder safari

  • Embrace the quiet. Wilpattu rewards patience. Sit by a lake with the engine off for ten minutes and see what turns up.
  • Give leopards and bears room. Sloth bears in particular are nervous and can be dangerous, so a good driver hangs back and never blocks an animal's path.
  • Stay in the jeep and keep voices low, except at the designated rest points, and take every scrap of rubbish home.
  • Don't treat it as a checklist. The deer, the storks and the light on the water are the experience too. The leopard, if it comes, is the cherry on top.

What you might see in Wilpattu

  • Leopard Possible Fewer jeeps than Yala and calmer sightings, but denser bush.
  • Spotted deer Very likely
  • Sambar deer Likely
  • Crocodile Likely
  • Water buffalo Likely
  • Asian elephant Possible
  • Sloth bear If you're lucky
  • Birds incl. painted storks & eagles Very likely

Our honest odds for a single half-day drive in a good season. Wild animals keep their own schedule, so nobody can promise a sighting.

Great for

  • Patient, quiet safaris
  • Leopard fans who hate crowds
  • The start or end of a trip
  • Birders

Maybe not for

  • Elephant-first trips (Udawalawe is far better)
  • Anyone wanting quick, sure sightings

Questions

Wilpattu FAQs

Which gate do you use?

Hunuwilagama, the main entrance, about an hour west of Anuradhapura. The western Eluwankulama gate has a history of flood closures, so we plan every trip from Hunuwilagama and all our times are from there.

Half-day or full day?

A half-day covers the nearer lakes and gives a fair chance of a leopard. Wilpattu is huge, though, and only a full day reaches the quieter villus deep inside, so if leopards and sloth bears are the dream, go for the full day.

Can we do Wilpattu as a day trip from Negombo or the airport?

Yes. The park is about 3¼ hours from Negombo, so most people take the afternoon drive, then head back or carry on towards Anuradhapura or Sigiriya. A morning drive would mean leaving before 3 am.

When is the best time to visit Wilpattu?

February to October, when the dry season shrinks the waterholes and animals gather at the villus. From November to January, monsoon rain can make tracks muddy and occasionally closes the park for a few days.

Will we see a leopard?

Possibly. Wilpattu has plenty of leopards but thick bush, so sightings are less frequent than in Yala and much calmer. Nobody can guarantee one.

Is Wilpattu good for elephants?

Not especially. Elephants are possible but less common than in Udawalawe or Yala, so if they're top of your list, add Udawalawe later in your trip.

Do we need to bring lunch on a full day?

Yes. There are no restaurants in the park, so bring a packed lunch (your hotel can usually make one) and plenty of water. Full-day jeeps stop at designated rest points to eat.
