Most Sri Lanka itineraries include at least one long drive: the hills to the beach, the airport to the Cultural Triangle, the east coast to the south. Several of those drives pass within reach of a national park. Add a safari stop and the day changes from four hours of staring out of the window into a dawn game drive with a transfer attached.
Below are the pickup, park and drop-off combinations that genuinely work in a day, and the ones that don't. The rule of thumb is simple: Yala or Udawalawe for anything between Ella, the south coast and the east, and Wilpattu for anything touching the airport, the Cultural Triangle or the north-west.
Every sample day here is worked out from drive times calibrated against real journeys, with an all-in estimate covering a private car, a private jeep and park tickets.
Why a safari stop beats a plain transfer
- You're in the car anyway. A safari on the way costs the detour, the driver's waiting time, the jeep and the tickets. A separate day trip costs all of that plus a second long drive, and often an extra night.
- Your luggage stays put. Bags stay locked in the car with your driver while you're out in the jeep.
- No extra hotel move. You don't have to spend a night in a park town, unless you'd like to.
- It breaks up the journey. Four hours in a car is tedious. Four hours split by elephants is a story.
The downsides: early starts, long days and a later arrival than a straight transfer. It's not ideal straight off a long-haul flight, and it's harder with very young children. If that's you, a separate, shorter safari day may suit you better.
Ella and the south coast (Yala or Udawalawe)
This is the most natural pairing on the island: both Yala and Udawalawe sit close to the road from the hills down to the beaches. Yala is the leopard park, with a pickup before 3 am and the coast by mid-afternoon. Udawalawe is the elephant park, with a start around half past three and a day about two hours shorter.
Tangalle and Hiriketiya are the closest beaches to both parks, Mirissa and Weligama the most popular, and Galle a little farther west, where Udawalawe makes the shorter day. The route works in both directions. Coming up from the coast, the morning safari makes even more sense, so you're not climbing the Ella Gap after dark. And if your dates fall in Yala's usual September–October closure, Udawalawe slots into exactly the same day.

Arugam Bay and the south coast via Yala
Surfers know this one. The east coast is at its best from about May to September, the south coast from December to April, and plenty of people switch between them. The road can't follow the coast through Yala and Kumana, so it swings inland, which makes Yala a natural stop.
From Arugam Bay, the Yala gate is about 3¾ hours away, too far for the dawn drive. The afternoon safari works neatly instead:
Tangalle is the closest beach to the park, so you're there a little after 8 pm. Mirissa is possible too, but you'd arrive closer to 10 pm. Going the other way, a pickup in Tangalle around half past three, or before 3 am from Mirissa, gets you the morning drive and Arugam Bay by mid-afternoon. Ella to
Mind the calendar: the east-coast season overlaps Yala's usual September–October closure. If Blocks 1 and 2 are shut on your date, Udawalawe slots into the same day.
Kumana National Park sits right next to Arugam Bay and is the easy local safari there. We don't run safaris in Kumana (yet). Yala makes more sense when you're moving between the coasts anyway, or when leopards top your list. Our Arugam Bay guide covers the town itself.
The west coast and Ella via Udawalawe
Heading to the hills from Colombo, Bentota, Hikkaduwa or Galle? Udawalawe sits handily between the coast and Ella. From Colombo it's about four hours to the gate, so you'd take the afternoon drive and reach Ella in the evening:
From Galle or Unawatuna, Udawalawe is close enough for the morning drive: a pickup around half past three has you in Ella by early afternoon. From Bentota and Hikkaduwa, the afternoon usually suits better. In reverse, Ella to

A word on the train: the famous scenic stretch runs between Kandy and Ella, but after cyclone damage it isn't running end to end. As of October 2026, the Nanu Oya–Ella–Badulla stretch is running and trains from Colombo reach Peradeniya and Gampola, but there are no through trains between Kandy and Nanu Oya. Officials are aiming for December 2026 for the hill section, while Kandy itself stays cut off until the damaged Peradeniya bridge is replaced (the target is January 2027), so check current status before you plan around it. Coming from the west coast, the road is much faster than the train anyway, and going via Udawalawe adds elephants to the day.
The airport and Sigiriya via Wilpattu
Wilpattu is the park for the start or end of a trip. It sits north of the airport, roughly on the way to the Cultural Triangle, and it's Sri Lanka's biggest national park: dozens of natural lakes, far fewer jeeps than Yala, and leopards that are possible but never promised.
From the airport it's about 3½ hours to the gate, so the afternoon drive fits:
It's a long day, ending in Sigiriya at around 9:30 pm, so it works best if you landed the day before and slept in Negombo, a short hop from the airport. Straight off an overnight flight, most people are happier saving Wilpattu for the end of the trip.
That's the easier direction anyway. From Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana, a pickup a little after 3 am gets you to Wilpattu for the dawn drive, then on to Negombo by mid-afternoon, or the airport by about 3 pm. If your flight leaves that evening, give yourself a generous buffer.
Wilpattu is at its best in the dry season, from February to October. From mid-November to mid-January, monsoon rain can turn tracks to mud and close parts of the park at short notice, so keep a little flexibility in your plans then. Our Sigiriya and Dambulla guide and Wilpattu guide have more on both ends of the day, and the Wilpattu park page lists pickup times from every town.

Sigiriya and Kalpitiya or Anuradhapura via Wilpattu
Wilpattu also links the Cultural Triangle with the north-west coast at Kalpitiya, and with the ancient city of Anuradhapura, the closest base to the park, about an hour from the gate.
- Sigiriya to
Wilpattu to Anuradhapura works in either session. A morning drive gets you to Anuradhapura before lunch, with the afternoon free for the stupas. - Kalpitiya to
Wilpattu to Anuradhapura combines lagoon and dolphins, then leopards, then ancient ruins, and you're in Anuradhapura before noon. - Sigiriya to Kalpitiya, or the other way, via the park takes most of the day. A morning drive from Kalpitiya reaches Sigiriya by about 2 pm. From Sigiriya, the afternoon drive suits better and gets you to the coast in the evening:
Trincomalee works too, with an afternoon drive and an evening arrival in Anuradhapura. See our Anuradhapura and Kalpitiya guides for where to stay.
Routes that don't work in one day
Some combinations look fine on a map and fall apart on the road. Sri Lanka's distances are short, but its roads are slow, especially in the hills. The ones to avoid:
- Colombo, Negombo or the airport to Yala and back in a day. It's five to five and a half hours each way. An afternoon drive followed by a night in Tissamaharama works; a same-day return doesn't.
- Kandy, Sigiriya or Trincomalee to Yala or Udawalawe. That's six to more than eight hours to Yala, and roughly five to eight to Udawalawe. Break the trip in Ella, or choose Wilpattu from Sigiriya or Trincomalee.
- Between Ella or the south coast and Wilpattu. Six hours or more each way. Wilpattu belongs at the start or end of your trip, not the middle.
- Nuwara Eliya to either southern park for the dawn drive. The pickup would be in the small hours. The afternoon works, though: Nuwara Eliya to
Udawalawe to Mirissa leaves mid-morning and reaches the coast a little after 8 pm. - Bentota, Hikkaduwa or Galle to Yala for the dawn drive. Three hours or more to the gate means a pickup before a quarter to three. Choose Udawalawe, or the afternoon drive with a night in Tissamaharama.
Kinder two-day versions
If a combination doesn't fit, the Matchmaker flags it and suggests the afternoon drive or a night near the park. Splitting a long day into two shorter ones is often the better holiday anyway:
- Ella to
Yala to Tissamaharama, then on to the coast. Take the afternoon drive on the way down and sleep in Tissa. If you're keen, add a dawn drive the next morning with a pickup around 5 am instead of before 3, then reach the beach after lunch. - Airport to
Wilpattu to Anuradhapura, then on to Sigiriya. Ending in Anuradhapura shortens the first day by a couple of hours. You get the ancient city the next morning, and Sigiriya is under two hours further on. - Colombo to
Udawalawe town, then up to Ella. Do the afternoon drive and sleep beside the park, or arrive the evening before and do the morning drive. Either way, Ella is an easy run the next day.
Choosing your safari session
Every route above can run as a morning, afternoon or full-day safari, but only one or two will suit your day. The Matchmaker suggests a session automatically, weighing a very early pickup against a very late arrival. As a rule of thumb:
- Morning, from the 6 am opening to about 10 or 10:30: best for wildlife, and for leopards in particular. Choose it when the pickup is a manageable small-hours start, as it is from Ella, Mirissa and Tangalle for either southern park, from Galle for Udawalawe, and from Sigiriya, Kalpitiya or Anuradhapura for Wilpattu.
- Afternoon, from about 2 or 2:30 pm to the 6 pm close: choose it when you're coming from farther away, such as the airport, Colombo or Arugam Bay, or when you'd rather not wake children at 3 am. Expect lunch on the way and an evening arrival.
- Full day, 6 am to 6 pm: best from a base close to the park, such as Tissamaharama or Anuradhapura. Tacked onto a transfer, it makes for a very long day.
Seasons matter too. Our best-time guide explains when each park is at its best, and the park comparison helps if you're still choosing between them. When you're ready, pick any pickup, park and drop-off and see the timeline and all-in price straight away.
Good to know
Can I do a Wilpattu safari on the way from the airport to Sigiriya?
Yes, with an afternoon drive: leave the airport mid-morning, drive in the park from about 2 pm and reach Sigiriya at around 9:30 pm. It's easiest if you landed the day before and slept near the airport.
Can I get from Sigiriya or Kandy to Yala in one day with a safari?
Not sensibly. Yala is six to seven hours' drive from either, so break the journey in Ella, or choose Wilpattu, which is about 2½ hours from Sigiriya.
How long is the drive from Arugam Bay to Yala?
About 3¾ hours to the main gate. From Arugam Bay you'd take the afternoon drive, or stay a night in Tissamaharama for the dawn one.
Is there a safari near Arugam Bay?
Kumana National Park is right next door and is the easy local option. We don't run safaris there (yet); Yala makes sense when you're travelling on to the south coast or Ella anyway.
Can I fit in a safari on the way to the airport?
Often, yes. A morning drive in Wilpattu from Sigiriya, or in Udawalawe from Ella, gets you to the airport by mid-afternoon. Leave a generous buffer and tell us your flight time when you plan.
What happens to my luggage on a safari transfer?
It stays locked in your private car with the driver, who waits near the gate while you're in the jeep. Take a small day bag with water, sun cream and a camera.
